It's like being there but with:<br />
<ul>
<li>a better view</li>
<li>the ability to hop between stages (and back) within seconds</li>
<li>cleaner clothes (often pyjamas)</li>
<li>no need for a plane ticket</li>

...I'd still rather be there, but it's a pretty rad alternative. Some highlight screenshots below.<br /></div>

ps. The tip off for this came from <a href="http://www.pitchfork.com/news/46097-watch-tune-yards-video-for-my-country/" target="_blank">Pitchfork</a>, which any avid music fan would have in their top five bookmarks already, I know.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08238520102956826919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2542522299239810044.post-52145845324237608262012-04-12T14:25:00.001+10:002012-04-12T14:25:10.456+10:00The Google Art ProjectHave you seen the <a href="http://www.googleartproject.com/" target="_blank">Google Art Project</a>? You can view artwork from museums around the world, either by artist or location. I like to start at the <a href="http://www.googleartproject.com/collections/#map" target="_blank">world map</a> and pretend I'm visiting Tokyo, New York, Paris and London all in one afternoon... but that's just me.<br />

So here's a new idea - a blog post I can share with everyone! Genius. Amirite?<br />
<br />
<b>FIRST UP</b><br />
<br />
Get thee a <a href="http://www.mta.info/metrocard" target="_blank">MetroCard</a>. The subway is the easiest/cheapest way to get around the city. $29 gets you seven days of unlimited travel on trains and local buses. Buy one at any subway booth.<br />
<br />
For the full tourist experience, you might want to try the <a href="http://www.citypass.com/city/ny.html" target="_blank">CityPass</a>. $89 inc Empire State Building, Natural History Museum, Guggenheim, MoMA, The Met & Circle Line Cruise. If you decide to get one, choose the Circle Line Cruise option instead of Statue of Liberty since you see it on the cruise anyway, and you'll see more of Manhattan from the water. Statue of Liberty itself is cool but the specialised tours are very busy and not worth the wait, I don’t think.<br />
<br />
<b>UPTOWN</b><br />
<br />
Seinfeld fans can hit up <a href="http://www.tomsrestaurant.net/" target="_blank">Tom's Restaurant</a> (2880 Broadway). If coming from Brooklyn or Downtown, you'll want to take the subway to Cathedral Pkwy station, then walk North. The inside actually looks nothing like you think, but go in for the pancakes anyway.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/guggenheim.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/guggenheim.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Guggenheim</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Check out the architectural marvel that is <a href="http://www.guggenheim.org/" target="_blank">The Guggenheim</a> (1071 Fifth Ave), designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Dare I say the building is the main attraction? If you decide to go inside, pickup the free audio tour (and remember it's closed on Thursdays).<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/naturalhistorymuseum.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/naturalhistorymuseum.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">American Museum of Natural History</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
There's something magical about the <a href="http://www.amnh.org/" target="_blank">American Museum of Natural History</a> - dinosaur bones, taxidermy and beautiful, old exhibits. Open daily, and admission fee is suggested only. Go early (like 9am) to avoid long queues.<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/themet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/themet.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The Temple of Dendur</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Another must-see museum is <a href="http://metmuseum.org/" target="_blank">The Met</a> (1000 5th Ave). Suggested admission fee, which can be interpreted as 'pay what you like' (or what you can afford). Eat something before you arrive because the cafe is crap, and you'll need at least 3-4 hours in the museum. Don't miss The Temple of Dendur, and find the Frank Lloyd Wright room too. Closed on Mondays.<br />
<b><br /></b><br />
<b>MIDTOWN</b><br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/moma.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/moma.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">MoMA</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<a href="http://www.moma.org/" target="_blank">MoMA</a> (11 West 53 St) is my favourite museum in NYC. Free entry on Fridays between 4-8pm, but I'd be inclined to go some other time to avoid the crowds. Pickup a free audio tour. Allow some time to check out their design store on your way out. Closed on Tuesdays.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/topoftherock.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/topoftherock.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">View of the Empire State Building from the Top of the Rock</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
While the <a href="http://www.topoftherocknyc.com/" target="_blank">Top of the Rock</a> (30 Rockefeller Plaza) lets you actually see the <a href="http://www.esbnyc.com/" target="_blank">Empire State Building</a> (350 Fifth Ave), I think the view from the Empire State is better. But that's just me. You'll want to be there either first thing in the morning to avoid the crowds, or to catch the sunset so you get both the daytime and nighttime view. Get the audio tour – if you have a Citypass it’s free.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/grandcentralstation.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/grandcentralstation.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Grand Central Station</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<a href="http://grandcentralterminal.com/" target="_blank">Grand Central Station</a> (87 E 42nd St) looks just like the movies, as long as you turn away from the giant Apple store that now takes over the balcony. Try to find the <a href="http://joannagoddard.blogspot.com.au/2011/11/secret-of-grand-central.html" target="_blank">secret whispering gallery</a>.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/centralpark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/centralpark.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Central Park</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
The best way to see Central Park is by bicycle. Hire one from <a href="http://www.libertybikesny.com/" target="_blank">these guys</a> (Liberty Bicycles, 846 9th Ave) and spend two hours riding around the park, with stops at the Carousel and Strawberry Fields.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/highlinepark.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/highlinepark.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The High Line Park</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<a href="http://www.thehighline.org/" target="_blank">The High Line</a> is a park built on an elevated former freight rail trestle on the West Side of Manhattan. It runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District, through Chelsea, to 30th Street. Enter at the corner of 10th Ave and W 30th St then walk all the way to the other end.<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/empirediner.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/empirediner.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Empire Diner</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
If you're hungry after walking the High Line, head back up to the <a href="http://www.thehighlinernyc.com/" target="_blank">Highliner Restaurant</a> (210 10th Ave). You might recognise it from <i>Igby Goes Down</i>, <i>Men in Black II</i>, <i>Home Alone 2</i>, or the Woody Allen flick, <i>Manhattan</i>. It used to be called the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Empire_Diner" target="_blank">Empire Diner</a>.<br />
<br />
<b>GREENWICH VILLAGE</b><br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/cafewha.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/cafewha.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Cafe Wha?</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Start anywhere on Bleecker St, then wander your way through MacDougal, Sullivan, Thompson and Laguardia, with a stop at Washington Square Park. You'll probably pass <a href="http://cafewha.com/" target="_blank">Cafe Wha</a> (115 Macdougal St), made famous by the likes of Bob Dylan and Allen Ginsberg as regular frequenters there in the 1960s.<br />
<br />
If hunger strikes, go to <a href="http://www.quantumleaprestaurant.com/" target="_blank">Quantum Leap</a> (226 Thompson St) for awesome, well-priced vego food. There's also <a href="http://www.caffereggio.com/" target="_blank">Caffe Reggio</a> (119 MacDougal St) if you'd rather a coffee and panini. Or walk a little further West for beer and jazz at the <a href="http://www.fatcatmusic.org/" target="_blank">Fat Cat</a> (75 Christopher St).<br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/astorplace.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="266" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/astorplace.jpg" width="400" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Astor Place</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
Also in the area - lookout for a black cube sculpture in the middle of the intersection at Astor Place. If you have a friend (or obliging stranger), both push in the same direction to spin it. Seriously! It moves!<br />
<br />
<b>DOWNTOWN</b><br />

The <a href="http://www.siferry.com/" target="_blank">Staten Island Ferry</a> is free, runs 24 hours a day, and gives you a nice view of the Statue of Liberty. It takes 30 minutes to get to Staten Island, then you can stay on the same ferry to come back. I haven't taken the time to check out Staten Island itself, not really sure what's there!<br />

Every now and then, I get a craving for Thai food. Actually, let's be honest, it's probably once a week! When I happen to have the ingredients at home, I make this vegetarian Pad Thai. It's pretty darn good. The recipe below is how I made it tonight, but if I'd been a little more well prepared I would've added some bean shoots.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/vegetarianpadthai.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/vegetarianpadthai.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Ingredients:</div>
<br />
<ul>
<li>Flat rice noodles</li>
<li>Firm tofu, cut into 1cm cubes</li>
<li>1 small carrot</li>
<li>1 small brown onion</li>
<li>1 spring onion</li>
<li>1 egg</li>
<li>1 clove garlic</li>
<li>1 small piece of fresh ginger</li>
<li>1 small red chili</li>
<li>1 lime</li>
<li>1 tbsp tamarind paste</li>
<li>1 tbsp soy sauce</li>
<li>A squeeze of Sriracha chili sauce</li>
</ul>
<div>
Make it:</div>
<div>
<ol>
<li>Cook the rice noodles in boiling water for 7-8 minutes, then set aside to drain.</li>
<li>Heat about 1 tbsp canola oil in a small frying pan and fry the tofu (stirring) until it starts to brown, then set aside on paper towel to soak up excess oil.</li>
<li>Lightly beat the egg in a small bowl (a few quick flicks with a fork is enough!), then pour into the same small frying pan used for the tofu. Let it cook for a minute or two, then flip. Place the cooked egg on a chopping board and slice into strips, then put aside.</li>
<li>Chop the onions and carrots, then heat a tbsp canola oil in a large wok and throw them in to fry.</li>
<li>Meanwhile, finely chop the garlic, ginger and chili and throw them in too.</li>
<li>While that's cooking, put 3/4 cup boiling water in a mug, then add the tamarind, soy and Sriracha. Squeeze in juice of the lime, and stir it under the tamarind paste has mostly dissolved.</li>
<li>Pour this into the wok with the onion/carrot etc, then add the precooked rice noodles.</li>
<li>Stir it altogether until the sauce has coated the noodles, then serve into bowls.</li>
<li>Top with the fried tofu and sliced egg.</li>
<li>Eat!</li>
</ol>
<div>
...one day I'll come back to this recipe and include proper quantities, but I usually just make it up depending on how many people are eating.</div>

Having been out for proper okonomiyaki in <a href="http://yeahjapan.blogspot.com/" target="_blank">Japan</a>, I decided to see if I could make something remotely close to the same dish, and vegetarian! It's really just the bonito (fish) flakes they put on top that needed to be left out. You can interchange pretty much all of the vegies except the cabbage, but condiments are essential. This version was adapted from the <a href="http://www.justhungry.com/2006/02/masterchef_day__2.html" target="_blank">Just Hungry</a> blog.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/okonomyaki.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2012/okonomyaki.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
Ingredients:<br />
<br />
<ul><li>1/4 cabbage, finely chopped</li>
<li>1/2 red onion, finely chopped</li>
<li>1 leek, finely chopped</li>
<li>1 small potato, grated</li>
<li>1 tbsp grated fresh ginger (you could also try <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gari_(ginger)" target="_blank">sushi ginger</a>)</li>
<li>1 tsp sesame oil</li>
<li>1 1/2 cups plain white flour</li>
<li>1 egg</li>
<li>2 cups water</li>
<li>1 tsp vegetable stock powder</li>
<li><a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kewpie-Mayonnaise/19549700185" target="_blank">Kewpie mayonnaise</a> (to serve)</li>
<li><a href="http://www.bulldog.co.jp/products/home/item0103.html" target="_blank">Bull-dog tonkatsu sauce</a> (to serve; I didn't have it this time and felt the dish was slightly lacking without!)</li>
<li><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sriracha_sauce" target="_blank">Sriracha sauce</a> (to serve; optional)</li>
</ul><div>Method:</div><div><ol><li>In a reasonably large mixing bowl, dissolve the vegie stock in 1 cup of boiling water, then add 1 cup of cold water.</li>
<li>Beat the egg into the stock water, then add the potato and sesame oil.</li>
<li>Sift the plain flour in and mix until you have a thick batter.</li>
<li>Add the other ingredients to this mixture as they're chopped (i.e. cabbage, red onion, leek, and ginger), then stir until everything is coated.</li>
<li>At this stage, I divided the mixture into four portions, being careful to get an even amount of the liquid "batter" in each. (You could just spoon it out from the same bowl for each pancake though.)</li>
<li>Heat a little canola oil (or peanut oil; anything without a strong flavour) in a non-stick frying pan on medium heat.</li>
<li>Spoon out a quarter of the batter to make the first pancake, let it cook for a few minutes until the edges look a bit brownish then flip it over.</li>
<li>Let it cook for another 10 minutes or so (I had to lower the heat so it wouldn't burn).</li>
<li>Repeat with the other three portions.</li>
<li>Serve with kewpie and tonkatsu (and chopped spring onion, and Sriracha if you're that way inclined!)</li>

Anyway, this weekend marked the <a href="http://2011.mmf.com.au/" target="_blank">21st birthday</a> of the <a href="http://mmf.com.au/" target="_blank">Meredith Music Festival</a> so I thought I'd share one of my photos. These are onigiri, which are Japanese rice balls. There's a neat little intro to them over <a href="http://justbento.com/handbook/bento-basics/onigiri-on-parade-guide-onigiri-omusubi-rice-ball-shapes-types-and-fun">here</a>. おいしい!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2011/onigiri.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2011/onigiri.jpg" width="400" /></a></div><br />
I've adapted the recipe from a few places to come up with something that works for me. Now tested it out a fair few times so it's ready to be posted...<br />
<br />
<b>Ingredients:</b><br />
<ul><li>2 cups sushi rice (I use <a href="http://www.sunrice.com.au/our-products/rice-range/japanese-style-sushi-rice">SunRice brand</a>)</li>
<li>1 small brown onion</li>
<li>A handful of mushrooms (any kind will do; I use 4-5 button mushies)</li>
<li>2-3 pickled gherkins (yep, the ones in a jar)</li>
<li>Small handful of frozen peas</li>
<li>2ish tbsp <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mirin">Mirin</a></li>
<li>1ish tbsp soy sauce</li>
<li>1ish tbsp rice vinegar</li>
<li><a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Furikake">Furikake</a> to sprinkle on top (I use a vegetarian version. Cut nori sheets would work too, or no seasoning at all... they're still good)</li>
</ul><div><b>Rice Preparation:</b></div><div>The full article on rice prep (including photos) is over <a href="http://www.justhungry.com/2003/11/japanese_basics_1.html">here</a>, but I cheat a little with the timing, and use a rice cooker (check the packet instructions if you don't have one).</div><div><ol><li>Rinse your rice like you've never rinsed rice before - put it all in a saucepan with running cold water, swishing with your fingers, then tipping out water and doing it again - over and over and over until the water runs clear.</li>
<li>Set it aside in a strainer to drain for at least 30mins.</li>
<li>Put it into your rice cooker (turned OFF) with 3 cups of cold water. Cover and leave to soak for at least 30mins.</li>
<li>Turn ON the rice cooker and let it do its thing. Usually about 15mins but might vary.</li>
<li>Turn OFF the rice cooker (i.e. don't leave on "keep warm" setting) and leave rice to cool for a few mins. Your rice is now ready to use.</li>
</ol><div><b>Filling Preparation:</b></div></div><div>This is the bit I made up, but it works really well. There are some other filling ideas over <a href="http://www.justhungry.com/2003/12/obento.html">here</a>.</div><div><ol><li>Finely chop the onion, mushrooms, gherkins and pop into a small saucepan.</li>
<li>Add the peas and sauces (mirin, soy and rice vinegar) then keep stirring until everything is warm and sauce has reduced a little (about 10mins).</li>
<li>Take it off the heat and place in a small bowl, ready for serving.</li>
</ol><div><b>Putting Together:</b></div></div><div>Someone else has already explained this better than I can, so go ahead and read <a href="http://www.justhungry.com/2007/01/onigiri_omusubi_revisited_an_e.html">their post</a> then come back. In case the link ever disappears, here are the basic steps:</div><div><ol><li>Using a smallish bowl (8cm diameter or thereabouts), line it with Glad Wrap (i.e. cling film) so it overhangs the edge by quite a lot.</li>
<li>Pop a pinch of salt in.</li>
<li>Spoon in a good dollop of the cooked rice (almost a full cup, depending on how big you want your onigiri to be).</li>
<li>Press down in the centre with a teaspoon so the rice gently spreads with a hole in the middle, but don't pierce through to the bottom.</li>
<li>Spoon in 1-2 teaspoons of your filling.</li>
<li>Gather the Glad Wrap and pull it out of the bowl so you can shape the ball, ideally so the rice encapsulates the filling in a triangular-ish shape.</li>
<li>Gently unwrap the Glad Wrap and place onigiri on your plate.</li>
<li>Sprinkle with furikake or just leave as is.</li>
<li>Eat!</li>

Incidentally, she's playing at the <a href="http://northcotesocialclub.com/">Northcote Social Club</a> next Friday, with Jen Cloher too. Hmmm...<br />

You know when you forget for a while then something makes you remember again? Yeah."</i><br />
- me, just then, on <a href="http://twitter.com/thousandthreads">Twitter</a>.<br />
<br />
Kinda just inspired myself to write this list! In no particular order...<br />
<br />
<b>Google Street View</b><br />
Being able to take a virtual walk through a faraway city you've never been to. Google kindly provides <a href="http://maps.google.com.au/intl/en/help/maps/streetview/">some recommendations</a> if you don't have a globe handy to spin and plant your finger.<br />
<br />
<b>Shazam</b><br />
You know <a href="http://www.shazam.com/">the app</a> that listens to a few seconds of a song and then tells you what it is?<br />
<br />
<table cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="float: left; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><tbody>
<tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2011/ipadwithheadphones.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img border="0" height="200" src="http://i286.photobucket.com/albums/ll92/thousandthreads/2011/ipadwithheadphones.jpg" width="200" /></a></td></tr>
<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">I <3 my iPad & purple headphones!</td></tr>
</tbody></table><b>Apple</b><br />
My MacBook, iPhone, iPod, iPad... I know it's shallow to place so much appreciation on material objects, but they truly improve my life. Pretty much <a href="http://www.apple.com/">all of them</a>. It seems particularly relevant today with the passing of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steve_Jobs">Steve Jobs</a>. What a brilliant man.<br />
<br />
<b>Google Goggles</b><br />
Have you tried <a href="http://www.google.com/mobile/goggles/#text">this</a>? Take a photo of something and Google figures out what it is. Actually I suppose it's visual Shazam, huh? I know it's the second Google mention, but it's worth it. Trust me.<br />
<br />
So I'm really saying, modern technology amazes me (among other things!). If you're reading this, you're in the <a href="http://www.internetworldstats.com/stats.htm">30 percent</a> of the world population with access to <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet">the Internet</a>, which is pretty damn amazing too. Consider yourself lucky.<br />
<br />
In closing, I think everyone should listen to Louis CK's take on the modern world, just for a little perspective: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8r1CZTLk-Gk">"Everything's amazing, nobody's happy"</a>.<br />

Something about the road being closed and a bunch of people in one place. This was the <a href="http://highstreetnorthcote.com.au/events/high-noon/">High Noon festival</a> in Northcote last weekend. I spent most of the day just walking around, but something about it was just... nice.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08238520102956826919noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2542522299239810044.post-27191284920721783102011-09-12T19:34:00.001+10:002011-09-24T15:17:45.440+10:00Guilty pleasureI'll admit it, I'm excited to hear new <a href="http://florenceandthemachine.net/">Florence & The Machine</a>.<br />

I've just come back from Japan, and this has to be one of my favourite photos from the trip...<br />
<br />
<b>DON'T DEATH, LET'S HAPPY!</b><br />
<br />
It was some kind of street art poster in Tokyo. I've also put up a few <span id="goog_134780342"></span><a href="http://www.smash-uk.com/frf11/">Fuji Rock</a><span id="goog_134780343"></span> photos on my <a href="http://yeahjapan.blogspot.com/">Japan blog</a>, and will probably update that with more tidbits over the next few weeks.<br />
<br />
The only problem with going on an awesome holiday is that it makes you want another one. Immediately.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08238520102956826919noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2542522299239810044.post-25179193050027414232011-07-09T17:20:00.001+10:002011-09-24T15:18:05.192+10:00Blue ValentineI watched <a href="http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1120985/">Blue Valentine</a> today - it tells the story of a relationship over a number of years, showing both its beauty and dysfunction. I'll warn you, it wasn't a rom-com but I really enjoyed it.<br />

<div>Ingredients:</div><div><ul><li>8 eggs</li>
<li>8 plain tortillas</li>
<li>1 can kidney beans, rinsed and drained</li>
<li>1 small brown onion, chopped</li>
<li>1 small clove garlic, chopped</li>
<li>1 tomato, chopped</li>
<li>1 avocado, sliced</li>
<li>1/2 tsp paprika</li>
<li>1/2 tsp vegie salt (similar to vegie stock; use regular salt if unavailable)</li>
<li>Grated cheese (to taste)</li>
<li>Jalapenos (to taste)</li>
<li>Tabasco sauce (to taste)</li>
</ul></div><div>Method:</div><div><ol><li>Fry the onion and garlic in a little oil until soft, then add the kidney beans, tomato, paprika and vegie salt.</li>
<li>Cook until heated through then divide the mixture evenly between the tortillas.</li>
<li>In the same pan, fry up the eggs.</li>
<li>While they're cooking you can place the other ingredients on top of the bean mix (sliced avocado, jalapenos, grated cheese and tabasco).</li>
<li>When the eggs are cooked, placed them on top of everything else.</li>
</ol></div><div>Serves 4 hungry people, or 8 less hungry people.</div><div><br />
</div><div>One time when I was feeling particularly motivated I made the tortillas from scratch using <a href="http://homesicktexan.blogspot.com/2007/03/and-end-to-my-quest-flour-tortillas.html">this recipe</a> (well worth the effort).</div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08238520102956826919noreply@blogger.com0
